What have I been working on since my last blog update? I have been designing and beading a lot of new projects. So here are my latest bead creations.

"My TV Set" I love watching TV. So I have designed a cubic right angle version of an old TV set. This TV set opens at the top and has vintage cubic right angle weave programs stored inside. There are five different cubic right angle weave slides with a different design on the front and the back of each one. The programs can be rotated to the front for viewing on the TV screen. The TV set measures 2" across by 2 1/4" by 1 1/8". It is worked in size 15/0 seed beads. There is an antenna and a plug. This TV is always "on", even though it is not plugged in.

"My Yellow Parakeet,"Jesse" "Jesse" is my 5 year old yellow and green talking parakeet. His coloring is different from my other beaded parakeets, so I had to re-design my beaded parakeet pattern to match him. He is worked in Peyote stitch in size 15/0 seed beads. He measures 6" long including his tail. He has a jointed head and opens in the middle to reveal an inner compartment. I also took pictures of all my beaded parakeets together. "Casey" was green with a yellow head, "Frankie" was blue and white, and "Jesse" is yellow with a green tummy.

Witch/Black Cat Etui The etui is worked in bead embroidery with size 11/0 seed beads, on an Ultrasuede backing. There is a witch face on one side and a black cat face on the other side. The features are raised and shaped with extra layers of felt under the Ultrasuede. The teeth are pearls. The etui measures 6 1/2 x 4 1/2". I hand made the sterling silver wire hinge. The etui is lined in black Ultrasuede with black silk ribbon rushing. The etui is filled with my collection of rare antique witch sewing tools.

Swordfish Stiletto The swordfish stiletto is bead embroidery on Ultrasuede. It is my version of an antique stiletto swordfish. It is beaded with size 15/0 seed beads. The swordfish measures 4 1/2" including the metal stilello. I used an antique stiletto for the sword.

Miniature Beaded Cat Automaton My second miniature beaded automaton is a cat with a fish bowl. Turn the handle, and the cat pulls the goldfish out of the beaded fish bowl. The automaton sitting cat is 1" high on a 3/4" plastic base. The base holds my hand made mechanism. The cat and the fishbowl are beaded with size 15/0 seed beads. The cat is fully jointed.

Patchwork Beaded Vessels The Patchwork Beaded Vessel is a three dimensional cup-shaped freeform art object. It is worked in Peyote stitch using 11/0 seed beads, 8/0 seed beads, Delica® beads, bead mix, decorative beads, and wire shapes that are incorporated into the beading. The instructions show how to make the wire shapes. The vessel measures approximately 1 ½” high x 2 ½” diameter, not including the legs. Instructions for this project are available for sale on my website and on Etsy.

"Totally Tubular" Necklace This is a sampler necklace, worked in eight colors of size 11 seed beads. The necklace has nine unique beaded peyote pattern sections alternating with eleven different beaded beads. The sampler necklace uses the following bead stitches – Peyote, Ndebele, right angle weave, netting and spiral rope. A special 3-dimensional sliding beaded bead completes the necklace.

"Scarey Witch Humbug" The beaded witch humbug is a three dimensional triangular shaped scissors fob or necklace pendant. It is worked from a color chart, using 14 colors of size 11 Delica® beads. It measures approximately 1 ¼” x 1 ½” not including the fringe. This little fob is stuffed with Ultrasuede® scraps. A small magnet can be inserted inside to turn the humbug into a convenient needle grabber. Fancy beads or crystals create the fringe along the top and bottom edge of the humbug. I added a charm at the top to complete the decoration. This pattern is available for sale.

"Peacock Humbug" The beaded peacock humbug is a three dimensional triangular shaped scissors fob or necklace pendent. It is worked from a color chart, using 10 colors of size 11 Delica® beads.

"Loopy Needle Case" The loopy beaded needle case fits over a 2 1/4” long, finished wooden needle case. The needle case can accommodate 2” beading needles as well as smaller needles and pins. It can be worn as a necklace pendent. The finished needle case measures approximately 1 ¼” x 3” including the loops. This little needle case is made in brick stitch, using seed beads, bugle beads and 4mm fire polished crystals. This pattern is available for sale.

Abstract Sculpture, Dollar Bill, Bead Embroidered Frog Box, the Book

My beadwork is pictured in Marcia DeCoster's new book "Marcia DeCoster Presents". There is an interview and four pages of my beadwork in the book. Thank you, Marcia.

Abstract Sculpture I enjoy cubic right angle weave very much. I have created a cubic right angle weave sculpture that measures 6" wide by 5 1/2" high. It is made with 11/0 seed beads. The unique feature about this piece is that it has three different designs depending on the viewing angle.

Dollar Bill in Cubic Right Angle Weave. The dollar bill is approximately the size of a real dollar, 5" x 2 1/2". I used a real dollar bill as my pattern for this piece. The beaded dollar bill is made with 15/0 seed beads. It has the front and the back of the bill. I have been asked why didn't I make a hundred dollar bill. The answer is that I didn't have a real hundred dollar bill. I had a one dollar bill. I worked the dollar in rows. I worked the front and the back of the bill at the same time. I have named my dollar bill, "It's Tough to Make a Buck".

Bead Embroidered Frog Box I love doing bead embroidery. This project has taken 6 months to complete. The box measures 5 7/8" wide x 4 1/2" deep x 4" high. It is made with 15/0 seed beads and a few assorted special beads. I created the box pattern and designed all six bead embroidered panels. I have named my design, "Sunrise Over the Frog Pond". I worked some three dimensional beaded stump work elements on the box design. The frogs and the flower petals stand out from the background. The box is made from Ultra Suede, pellon and batting. It is entirely stitched by hand. No glue was used. I worked out a unique way to assemble the box to make it fun and easy to complete.

I have been designing some new projects, teaching beading classes and writing instructions for bead projects. Here are some recent creations. My new website is - www.idelegilbert.com.

Here are two new beaded micro miniatures - a multi-colored bear - 1 1/8" high and a tiny version of my Blue Jean Bunny - 1 1/4" high. They are both fully jointed and are worked in Peyote stitch with vintage size 18/0 seed beads.

My new miniature black and white cat is- 1 1/2" high. It is fully jointed and is worked in Peyote stitch with size 15/0 seed beads.

I have a new pattern available for an elegant "Stained Glass Vessel". The vessel is 2 1/2" high x 3" wide. It is a free standing structure with no glass support inside. The vessel is worked in brick stitch with various sizes of Czech seed beads and Delica beads.

I have designed a 2 1/2" high drawstring purse made out of cantaloupe seeds and size 9/0 3-cut beads. The fabric lining is Dupioni silk. The drawstrings are silk ribbons. The purse is a smaller version of purses made in the early 1900's.

I have been working with perforated paper and beads to create needlecases and other items based on antique pieces in my collection.
This first needlecase has a floral design and measures 3"x 3". It is worked on 14 mesh perforated paper with floss and 11/0 seed beads. The inside of the case is made from interlaced satin ribbons.

The next needlecase has a basket design. I named this one "It's Magic" because it is based on an antique trick called a magic wallet. The ribbons inside the needlecase magically flip an inserted item from under the straight ribbons to magically appear under the crossed ribbons. This needlecase measures 2 1/4"x 3 1/2". It is worked on 14 mesh perforated paper with floss and 11/0 seed beads. This piece includes cutout squares and raised stacks of perforated paper.

The third needlecase looks like a small box, but it is actually a needlecase when the lid is opened. This "Kitty" needlecase measures 2 1/2"x 3 1/4". It is worked on 14 mesh perforated paper with floss and 11/0 seed beads. This design features raised perforated paper borders.

Using Peyote stitch, I have designed two humbug needle grabbers. One is a mermaid design. The second is geometric. They are each 1 1/4" plus fringe. They are made with Delica beads. There is a magnet inside to grab the needle.

I am including photos of my miniature beaded boxes. The boxes are made just like my "Tiny Treasure Boxes", but they are made with size 15/0 seed beads. They are 3/8" wide x 1/2" high including the lid.

My micro miniature boxes measure 3/16" wide x 1/4" high including the lid. The tiniest box is 1/8" wide x 3/16" high including the lid. They are all made from vintage seed beads sizes -18/0 - 22/0. The lids all open.

I have created two more theme bracelets: Scaredy Cat and Betty Boop a Doop. I have also returned to making new designs of my miniature beaded bears.

I enjoy doing bead embroidery. It is fun to collect the objects for the bracelets and use them to create a one of a kind piece. The bracelets are worked on Ultra Suede. The beads are mostly size 11/0 with some larger 8/0 accent beads.

My magician bear is from a drawing I did about five years ago. I wanted to create movement in my beadwork by making an automaton bear that would actually have the magician pulling a rabbit out of his hat. My goal was to combine my love of automatons with my beadwork. The bear is one and a half inches high. He is worked in Peyote stitch with size 15/0 seed beads. You can see my bear doing his act at
